T at bat

Tommy started t-ball last week. He loves it!
T at bat

“Daddy, this is a pretty nice t-ball place, but my shoes sure get dirty!”

Water break

In the dugout he alternated with chugging water…

In the Doug-out

and hanging with me and Thea.

Eventually all that water caught up with him and we ended up making a half-mad-dash/half-potty-dance gallop for the bathroom during the third inning.

Cloth Diapers

We’ve been using Cloth Diapers for about 1.5 years now. With landfills filling up and diapers being a HUGE contributor, we wanted to cut down on our contribution. We’ve tried multiple different brands and primarily use gDiapers right now.

Recently a new kind, GroBaby, came out. I love to try new things. I can’t wait to get my hands on these. They have organic cotton, which is nice to put next to baby’s skin. And they are so cute!

I think I’m going to be sad when Thea potty trains. So many cute diapers out there! I guess I’ll have to start shoe shopping ;)

Hello, Newton…

We made it out to Newton Hills State Park last weekend for a little geocaching hike along the woodland trail.

Tommy and L decided to show off their respective backpacks.

And Tommy braved the wobbly suspension bridge all by himself!

Fresh Wild ‘gus

Fresh wild 'gus

I heard of a couple patches of wild asparagus through a coworker and we just had to go searching ourselves. The first trip was 2.5 weeks ago and they were nowhere to be found.

We went again last Saturday and hit the jackpot. We only scored 3 asparagus at the first location — though the biggest was approximately 18″ long (until Thea broke it in half when she was waving it around). Doug also scored 3 ticks (thankfully none attached). At the second location, we got about 18 or so more stalks. Tommy loved spotting the asparagus though sometimes he’d get so excited that he’d nearly trample it.

As we were packing up to go home, a vehicle came by with a lawnmower. My coworker told me that his family tried to go hunting on Sunday but the location had been mowed. I guess we got there just in time.

And how did we serve the asparagus? I pan fried it in homemade butter with salt and pepper. Wanted to keep it as simple as possible so we could enjoy the flavor. mmmmmm-mmm did we enjoy the flavor!

Lego Sink

“Mommy, I made a sink! This is where the water comes out. These are the handles, one is hot and one is cold. And these are the soap bottles.”

He then went on to make a stand for the faucet (”this is where the pipes are”) and a toilet (including a tissue box and another soap bottle) but I didn’t get pics of those.

Mixed up song lyrics

Tommy started singing “The flying purple people eater“

T: Last night on the tv show, ooh, rock & roll and a hole in his head
me: that should be “a horn on his head”
T: is it? I thought it was “a hole in his head”

Stubborn 5 year olds

March 24th, 2009 by Lindsey Posted in Life, Tommy | 1 Comment »

Yesterday was an interesting day with Tommy. He had gotten some new flipflops and wanted to wear them to school. Well, it had rained and it was cold so I told him no. He pouted but then put on his snow boots (why his snow boots and not his tennis shoes, I don’t know… spite?) and wore them all day. I told him that he could wear his flipflops when we got home.

So we got home from preschool/daycare and he put them on right away. He was playing nicely after supper when I decided we should take a walk because the rain had quit and that meant the pollen was out of the air. Well, he didn’t want to go on a walk! “Sometimes people don’t like to be outside. They just want to stay home!” (in other words, he was mad that I made him quit playing gameboy). We started down the block and he realized that he was cold w/o the sweatshirt I had told him to wear so we turned around so he could get it.
We continued on our walk and came across a tree that had dropped a bunch of bud thingies. At first he didn’t want to walk on them. I told him that it was ok, they won’t hurt us or anything. So he starts carefully walking over them. Halfway across, he announces “These things are spicing me out!”
We continued the walk and by the time we were about 2 houses away from our house, he announces that it was too cold for his flip flops and his feet were cold. I told him that he could put on socks when we got home so his feet would warm up and he said he didn’t want to do that because I “said that I could wear flipflops when we got home from school.”
Oh that kid is too stubborn sometimes.

Starting Seeds

Starting seeds, originally uploaded by djennewe.

We’re finally getting our garden veggie seeds started. Today I started peppers, leeks, onions, basil, parsley, and broccoli, and we began planning when we’ll start everything else and where it’s going to live.

And recently L started some basil in her USB greenhouse, which is, of course, plugged into our TV.

Food comes from farms

Tommy and I were talking about food while driving home from school one day, and at one point he said “And food comes from factories.”

I almost crashed the car.

“Thomas, food does not come from factories.  Food comes from farms and kitchens.”  One day shortly after this I asked him if he’d like to help make some of his favorite foods so he could see what they’re made of, including apple pies:

And pizza!

His mother and sister did end up throwing up that pizza though.  Probably just coincidence.

Holy egg-sucking density, Batman!

February 18th, 2009 by doug Posted in Science!, Tommy | No Comments »

Tommy and I did the “stick a hard boiled egg on top of a bottle with a fire inside and watch the air pressure push the egg into the bottle” experiment the other day to demonstrate air pressure.  We had no ring-stand, so I used a (sadly) empty wine rack to show that afterwards the egg was trapped in the bottle.

He and I talked a while back about whether or not certain kinds of things can float on water.  When he suggested out of the blue that very small rocks float on water I laughed very hard.  I told him that some liquids could float on water, and that water itself could float on other liquids.  To demonstrate this we shook up some cooking oil and dyed-blue water and watched them separate, and I confidently told him the oil would end up below the water.

Fail.

Though as it turns out, Erlenmeyer flask-shaped wine bottles do make nice impromptu Erlenmeyer flasks.
